What is love? What does it look like? How does it act? Although people all over the world are looking for love, very few people understand it. They can’t define it, and because of that they accept counterfeits. People today think that love can be discovered in words. Yet many people lie about their affections. Others believe it can be revealed in gifts. Yet, presents are often shallow expressions of guilt or manipulation instead of love. Still others think that it is a feeling. However, I don’t agree with that either.

If I only loved when I felt like it, then I would not love often. Let me suggest that love is more than a feeling, an emotion, or an expression, love is a commitment. When you love someone you consider how your actions will affect them. You invest in that relationship, and you exhibit faithfulness. Oh, and one more thing, true love is not selfish. It is giving, caring, and encouraging. True love doesn’t tear down, it builds up. It doesn’t take, but it gives. True love is willing to sacrifice for the other. That is the reason that the Bible says that the greatest expression of love ever recorded was when Christ willingly died upon the cross in your place. That is the most intense demonstration of commitment and love. And, he did it for you.
